Phnom Penh to Siem Reap, or vice-versa

There are several transportation options, each catering to different budgets and preferences. Whether you’re looking for an affordable bus ride, a luxurious cruise along the Mekong, or a quick flight, there are multiple ways to make the trip. Here’s a guide to help you choose the best mode of transport for your journey.

1. Traveling by Bus

One of the most cost-effective and convenient ways to travel between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap is by bus. With multiple departures daily and a variety of operators to choose from, this option is great for travelling on a budget. A huge perk of travelling by bus is the chance to watch the world go by, see the different villages, cities, and landscapes that you pass through and see the country in a raw and unfiltered light.

Traveling by Bus

The bus journey takes approximately 6 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. While this is one of the slower options, it remains an efficient and budget-friendly way to get to Siem Reap. Be sure you book through a reputable company – you can often find yourself being offered a journey by a random bus provider for cheap and then turn up to find a standard sedan with ten people crowded into it. Trust me, I learned this the hard way!!

  • Buses in Cambodia range from a minibus to a coach, depending on the journey. The majority of departures during the day are minivans that hold up to 16 people, and the comfort of the vehicle is usually reflected in the price of the ticket.
  • Using online booking platforms such as Bookaway, you can compare different bus companies, schedules, and ticket prices.
  • Buses depart from various locations in Phnom Penh, each company tends to have its own depot, so be sure to check before booking that your departure point is within reach.
  • Some of the most reputable operators include Giant Ibis, Mekong Express, CamboLink21 and Virak Buntham, offering a range of seating options from standard to VIP.
  • Keep in mind that roads can be a little chaotic in Cambodia and some companies push their drivers to make quick deadlines, resulting in risky driving. Always check reviews before booking and wear your seatbelt throughout the journey.
  • Busses make 2 or 3 pit stops depending on the route. Often, one of these stops is about 20 mins at a restaurant so the driver and travellers can get a meal.
  • Prices range depending on the company and generally fall between $10 and $15.

2. Taking a Mekong River Cruise

For those who enjoy a more leisurely journey, taking a Mekong River cruise from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap offers a unique experience, letting you see the lush jungle and rural fishing villages that line the riverbanks.

Mekong River cruise from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap

While this is the most expensive option, it provides an unforgettable experience, perfect for those looking to relax and explore Cambodia beyond the main tourist routes.

  • A Mekong cruise from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap typically takes 3 to 4 days, stopping at villages, floating markets, and cultural sites along the way.
  • Some well-known cruise operators include Heritage Line, Pandaw Cruises, and Toum Tiou, offering comfortable cabins, fine dining, and guided excursions.
  • You’ll need to book well in advance as the experience is highly popular; you can find some booking options here.
  • Contact the cruise company with plenty of warning if you have special dietary requirements so that they can meet your needs when serving food, otherwise, you might find that they aren’t prepared with ingredients or a menu.
  • Cruises can range from budget to luxury, with onboard amenities, tours, meals, and cabin accommodation quality all reflective of the price.
  • Prices can range from $200 to over $1000 per person depending on the type of experience you’re looking for, but even the cheaper options are still a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
  • If you don’t want a full cruise from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap but still want the stunning sights that come with travelling on the water, standard public boat journeys are available. These generally take around 7 to 8 hours, cost between $30 – $40, don’t make stops and have limited amenities other than simple seats and an onboard toilet.

3. Flying from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap

For travellers with a more limited time for travel, flying is the fastest way to get from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap and is relatively affordable. That being said, short-haul flights have a significant environmental impact due to the much higher carbon emissions per passenger, so I tend to avoid this option. It also means that you miss out on the amazing views and hidden gems you see during a ground-level journey across Cambodia. Generally, I’d only recommend flying if you’re in a hurry.

Flying from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap

Why Fly Phnom Penh to Siem Reap?

  • Cambodia Angkor Air, Sky Angkor Airlines and Bassaka Air operate direct flights between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, with a flight duration of just 45 minutes.
  • Flights aren’t always regular, with only a handful a day depending on the season and airline, so even though the journey is quicker, it might not fit well within your schedule.
  • Check your baggage allowance beforehand. Since the planes are often small, the limit could be quite different from that on an international connecting flight.
  • Flights typically cost between $50 to $150 one-way, depending on the season, airline, and how far in advance you book. Click below to check flight options.

4. Hotel Bus and Sleeping Bus Travel

If the idea of sitting on a bus for several hours is a bit daunting, several companies offer overnight buses with beds, meaning that you can go to sleep in Phnom Penh and wake up in Siem Reap before you know it. While you won’t get to see any of the world as you pass by, the hotel buses are usually quiet and dark, meaning that you can get a good night’s sleep and arrive early in the morning.

Why Travel From Phnom Penh to Siem Reap by Overnight Bus?

  • Though several companies offer overnight journeys, the VET Hotel Bus is generally the leading choice. The layout of the bus is similar to a hostel, with full-length beds and privacy curtains.
  • Buses are usually equipped with USB charging sockets, pillows and blankets, onboard toilets, and in some cases, free Wi-Fi.
  • Due to there being less traffic on the roads overnight, the journey can often end up being up to an hour shorter than expected, so your arrival time might vary from that on the schedule.
  • Buses usually have two layers of beds, some single and some double. The double beds are booked per side of the bed, so if you’re travelling alone, it’s best to book in advance to get a single bed, otherwise, you could find yourself sharing your bed with a stranger.
  • Busses usually depart at around midnight, so bear in mind that you could end up waiting around with your luggage for quite some time.
  • Similarly, arrival times are often between 5 and 6 am. Chances are, this will be well before your accommodation check-in time, so you’ll need a plan on where to leave your luggage after you arrive. The plus side of this is that you will get the full day to explore without having travel eat up your time.
  • Prices for a hotel bus or an overnight bus vary depending on the bus company, usually ranging between $16 and $20.

5. Journeying by Private Car or Taxi

For the most private and comfortable journey, hiring a private car or taxi is your best choice. If you’re travelling with friends, splitting the cost is a great way to make the journey more affordable whilst still having the flexibility to choose what time you are picked up, your starting point, and your point of arrival.

Private Car or Taxi

Why Travel From Phnom Penh to Siem Reap by Private Taxi?

  • Hotels and travel agents are usually the best place to go to find a trusted private driver that you can book in advance. Some reputable companies are Cambotours, Siem Reap Angkor Transport and Mekong Express.
  • Using a ride-hailing app such as Grab is sometimes possible, but you may find it difficult to connect to a driver who is willing to travel so far.
  • Bear in mind that after your driver drops you off, they will have to drive another 6 hours to get home, so they’ll be spending 12 hours behind the wheel or will need to find accommodation depending on the time of arrival. – giving them a tip is an appropriate way to thank them.
  • The drive from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap takes approximately 5 to 6 hours, and prices vary depending on the vehicle type, time of departure, and your negotiation skills.
  • Private drivers can charge as much or as little as they like, so it can be difficult to be sure you’re getting the best price. Generally speaking, the price for a standard sedan can start at around $90 up to a minivan for larger groups going as high as $200. It’s wise to also check that fuel is included in the cost, as some companies add this on as an extra charge.
